When it comes to sandwiches, Fenway Franks, roast beef sandwiches, and lobster rolls may be what Boston is best known for. But there are a lot of good places to get a top-notch burger in and around Boston, with standard flame-broiled patties and unique versions with a lot of toppings. We’ve put together a list of the city’s best burger places so you know where to get your favorite comfort food, including veggie options. From high-end cheeseburgers at the city’s best restaurants to fast food staples, there’s something for everyone.
1. PlantPub
Chef Mary Dumont’s 100% plant-based restaurant, PlantPub, is reimagining bar food without any animal products. With three different burgers on the menu, PlantPub shows that this is a tasty fact. First, you can choose between Impossible Meat and the shop’s house-blend veggie burger. Then, you can choose from toppings like kimchi aioli, guacamole, and hot sesame slaw. Aside from the burgers, there are other fast food staples like sweet potato and standard fries. Guests can even order the fries with cashew paprika cheese and vegan chili that are made in-house.
2. Alden & Harlow
Alden & Harlow’s (not so) Secret Burger would not be on this list if it wasn’t on it. After being talked about and praised for years, it’s finally on the table. The eight-ounce Creekstone brisket burger is made by chef Michael Scelfo, who is known for making bold meals with the best ingredients in town. The burger comes with a sauce that tastes like Thousand Island, lettuce, and tomato, and is served on a roll made in-house.
3. Aquitaine
This award-winning cafe with a Parisian theme is run by owner and senior chef Seth Woods. It might not look like a casual place, but the Aquitaine Truffle Burger is delicious. A big chunk of dry-aged beef comes on a toasted potato bun with sharp cheese, sweet onions, and truffle sauce. It is served with a pile of golden pommes frites.
4. The Blue Ox
Chef Anthony Caturano, who owns both Prezza and The Blue Ox, makes the beefy no-brainer Sin Burger, which has won Boston Magazine’s “Battle of the Burger” in the past. With layers of Applewood-smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, truffle sauce, and Swiss cheese, it’s clear that this burger lives up to the massive hype.
5. 224 Boston
224 Boston in Dorchester is a neighborhood favorite with a yard and a focus on comfort food. You can get a Steak Sandwich or Chicken Milanese, but the 224 Burger with caramelized onion sauce, yellow cheese, and crispy bacon on a sesame bun with hand-cut fries is the real show-stopper. The Veggie Burger, which has lettuce, tomato, hot but sweet togarashi sauce, and pickles between two sesame buns, is also pretty good.
6. Boston Burger Company
If you want something totally over the top, you’ll get it at Boston Burger Company. With options like the WTF Burger, which has pulled pork, mac ‘n cheese, crispy onion rings, pickles, and spicy BBQ sauce, and the famous Mac Attack, which is filled with homemade four-cheese mac ‘n cheese and bacon, it’s hard to go wrong (or leave hungry) here. And if you have room, add a specialty Freak Frappe to your meal for one of the most expensive drinks in Boston.
7. The Butcher Shop
The Butcher Shop is a classy homage to the butcher shops of old Europe. It is run by the well-known local chef Barbara Lynch, who is also behind B&G Oysters, Drink, Sportello, and more. It’s important to note that the menu might cost a lot, but biting into a TBS burger with a special aioli sauce is simply priceless.
8. Cusser’s
Cusser is a great place to get roast beef—it’s in the name, after all. But since we’re talking about burgers, this one is too good to pass up. The standard Burger & Fries order comes with a burger topped with a slice of cheddar, bread-and-butter pickles, lettuce, and the restaurant’s famous Comeback sauce, surrounded by perfectly crisp fries.
9. jm Curley
This no-nonsense bar is a must-stop if you are walking around the city all day. After a long day on your feet, the Curley Burger will be calling your name. It is a mix of beef, chuck, and short rib, topped with cheese, grilled onions, homemade pickles, and Russian dressing. The Veggie Burger is made of quinoa and black beans and topped with cheese, tomato, lettuce, caramelized onion, and jamama sauce, which is a mix of sour cream and chives.
10. Lower Mills Tavern
Lower Mills Tavern has almost everything you could want, except for the kitchen sink. But don’t get sidetracked by the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich. If you’re reading this, you’re looking for the best burgers in town, and the LMT Burger is the way to go. Still not sure? The freshly ground patty is topped with melted cheese, bacon, house-made special sauce, lettuce, tomato, and onion, and it’s all in between a buttery seeded brioche bun. Order the Black Bean Burger if you want to try something different from the usual. It comes on a soft potato roll with melted veggie cheese, romaine lettuce, tomato, and chipotle ranch sauce.
11. Metropolis
Even though this is a list of burgers, we have to say that Metropolis’s shoestring fries almost steal the show. We say “almost” because they also make a great burger. Since it opened more than 25 years ago, the cozy South End restaurant has been a neighborhood favorite. It serves simple dishes with a touch of good eating. Now, back to The Burger. It’s made with dry-aged beef, Applewood-smoked bacon, caramelized onions, cheddar cheese, and a special sauce made in-house. The result is a sandwich that really stands out.
12. Miznon
This street food place started in Tel Aviv and now has locations all over the world. Its newest US site opened earlier this year in Boston. Along with pitas, whole roasted broccoli, and other Mediterranean faves, Miznon serves a popular cheeseburger wrapped in a pita. The Folded Cheese Burger is a bun filled with grass-fed beef that was grilled until it was crispy, cheddar, garlic sauce, sour cream, tomato, and pickles. Even though it’s not a classic burger like the others on this list, you have to try it.
